Thursday, July 14, 2011 was a beautiful day!
Clear blue skies and 80 degree temperature set the stage for the outstanding success of the 15th annual Ken Daneyko Golf Classic.
Truly a hidden gem in Union, New Jersey, Suburban Golf Club provided a beautiful setting for a wonderful pre-game brunch on the veranda overlooking the course, followed by a fabulous round of golf. The grand reception was, as always, amazing, accompanied by the excitement of both the silent and live auctions.
We are most grateful to this event’s namesake, Ken Daneyko, legendary star of the New Jersey Devils, for his commitment and dedication to this major fundraiser. Also in yearly attendance is boxing great Gerry Cooney - always a crowd favorite! This year’s sports celebrities included Tony Siragusa, Super Bowl XXXV champ and Fox Sports commentator, and Grant Marshall, former NJ Devil and 2-time Stanley Cup champ. Thank you to Joe Nolan, of WABC-TV and WPLJ 95.5 and Scott Clark, former sports anchor of WABC-TV, for joining us on this special day in support of women in recovery, and their children.
Ed Stankiewicz, a Board of Directors member and long time Golf Chairman, emceed the event, with help from Bob Bendock, who rallied the crowd for a successful live auction. As always, the highlight of the event was the courageous story told by a current resident. That evening, this young lady shared her personal story, giving us insight into the desperate cycle of addiction and the success that the Center’s programs can provide. She received a standing ovation from all, including her angelic 3 year old son.
The Golf Committee meets monthly for the approximately six months leading up to the event. New members are always welcome and needed.
